Our PHS Color Guard performs along the side of our Pride of Pickering Band during our Fall marching season. To become a memeber there is no experience needed. We will teach you all you need to know. We start two weeks before the school year starts with band camp. At band camp we learn all fundamentals, routine, dance, and drill we need to know for the upcoming marching season.
The purpose of the color guard is to interpret the music that the marching band is playing via the synchronized work of flags, sabers, rifles, the air blade, and through dance.
Our Winter Guard is much like our Fall season with a few exceptions. Instead of performing at marching competitions and Friday night football games we take our competition to the gym. All competitions are held inside a gym where we use a floor mat and props to perform for a crowd. Our Winter Guard team is decided with an audition process and consists of schools in the surrounding parish. This year our team consists of 10 Pickering High School students and 5 Rosepine High School Students. Therfore we call ourselves Vernon Parish Winter Guard. We compete in the Louisiana Mississippi Color Guard Percussion Circut. Last year we came home with the GOLD medal and competed against 18 other schools in our division. Throughout the year we have professors from Northwestern State University come and work clinics with our students, as well as some of the top color guard clinicians in our state.
